The Chailly/Gewandhaus Orch. M2 and M8 concerts from the recent Leipzig Mahlerfest will be coming out on both DVD and Blu-Ray (Accentus) on Sept. 27 for the U.S. Look for the DVD to sell close to $25 and the Blu-Ray close to $40. The Mahler 8 was very good except for the tenor solos in Part II. Overall, the M2 was better. I'm planning on getting them both (maybe).

Cool. His M8 kicked major ass with the RCO - is this version as good? His M2 was unimpressive though, so I assume this one is better?

Yes Chalpie, this Leipzig M2 is definitely better. As for M8, the tenor here isn't nearly so good as Ben Heppner is on the Decca RCOA one. The rest of it is pretty good. In this case, I think the clear winner will be the M2.

Barry, I recall you saying that you wouldn't buy the Euroarts Blu-Ray performances of Abbado doing Symphonies 1-7 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. You did say that you did somewhat enjoy his M2 there, which I have on regular DVD. Do you know if the other Mahler symphonies by Chailly/Leipzig will be recorded and released? I'm looking to eventually getting a Mahler symphony cycle on Blu-ray, should one become available that's worth getting.

No, I'm sure that these are 'one-offs' because of the Leipzig Mahlerfest. They used many different orchestras and conductors during that festival. What I DO wish that Accentus would do, is issue the entire festival! But I guess that that's just an impossibility.
By the way, I'm keeping the DVD of the Abbado/LFO M3. I might get the M7 as well. The M6 is a tad too relaxed for my taste.

The Chailly M2 was the talk of the festival, at least while I was there. Sadly, I wasn't present for it. The 6th with Zinman and Tonhalle got great kudos as well. Zinman got like 10 curtain calls. I agree with Barry and wish they could have arranged a way to produce them all on blu-ray. That would have been something.

That M2 video preview looked killer! Wow.

I wish they would issue the Salonen/Dresden Staatskapelle M3 on to DVD/Blu-Ray. That was terrific.

was that from the same Mahler festival?

They both look good to me.
Amazon.com has them available for pre-order (release date 9/27) at the following prices:
$27.99 - Blu-ray
$17.49 - DVD
I'm in for a pair of Blu-rays. Thanks for the heads-up, Barry.
