Title: OT: Wigglesworth's Shostakovich cycle now available as a SACD box set
Post by: erikwilson7 on July 02, 2021, 02:11:58 PM
As was inevitable, Mark Wigglesworth's remarkably consistent and stunningly recorded Shostakovich cycle with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic (same as Edo de Waart's Mahler cycle) on BIS is now available in all formats on Presto. I think these recordings rival Petrenko's and Barshai's, though they tend to be on the expansive and dark-as-death emotional side. Certainly a good addition to your Shostakovich collection.

Oh, and it's 35% off until September 8 (as are other BIS products on Presto). For once it's currently cheaper to purchase here than on Amazon.

I have the 4th, 8th, 9th, 12th, and 13th, and love them all. Wigglesworth may not be the most dramatic Shosy conductor on Earth, but as Erik said he is very musical and consistent from one symphony to another. And the BIS SACD sound will blow your socks off.
