Is odering from Japan all over?
« on: March 22, 2011, 04:15:46 AM »
So, should we never order CDs and DVDs from Japan from now on?

I mean, because of radiation?

They say it will take 10 years to completely get rid of the radiation in much of Japan.

This is such bad news for people like us.

Just don't eat them and you'll be fine.  ;D

Seriously, I don't plan to give it a second thought. I don't order a lot of Japanese commercial CDs, but I do order case-lots of Japanese-made Taiyo-Yuden blank CD-Rs and DVD-Rs. They're the best available; I use them in all my work and plan to continue doing so. I only hope the manufacturing plants haven't been damaged by the quake.

I'd be more concerned about the winds off the Pacific Ocean than I would about radioactive CDs.

John,

I've not yet seen any definitive scientific evidence one way or the other. All I meant to say is that, based on my present understanding of the situation and of the radiation levels involved, I won't be altering my buying habits of Japanese hardware or software. If they were to have a major radiological catastrophe—say a full-scale Chernobyl-like melt-down of one or more of the reactors, and they begin to issue warnings in Tokyo—then my position could change.

Just to be safe, I wouldn't eat them. The idea that small traces of radiation would make its way into a clean-room and get onto CD's is probably extremely remote. If you planted the CD's out with a bunch vegetables in a garden, you might get some. Besides, a bit of radiation might give your player that sort of 'eerie glow in the dark' effect   ;D

Look at it this way: if you want to help Japan, buying some of their excess and useless CDs might be an OK place to start ("useless", in that you can't eat them or produce heat with them)

Thanks, James & Barry,

I am all for helping Japan and that's why I asked you folks it would be safe to order CDs there before I commit myself.

I have to get a coupled discs from there including,

Abbado M9th Blu-ray
Ozawa M9th Blue-ray (I have only DVD version)
live Sinopoli M3rd & M6th

etc.

Best,

John,

John,

I think we should all pitch in for a geiger counter for you. Just don't let your pets or children lick the packaging   ;)

OK, here is my real question:

Do they still take orders from USA and ACTUALLY ship them out??

Or, just take orders without promising when they'll be shipped?
