The symphony starts at around 48 min. into it.

This Seventh may well be Daniel Harding's BEST outing in Mahler thus far.  76 min. of glorious music making!

Awesome. Thank you John. Yeah, it seems the 'younger generation' are better attuned to Mahler 7 - none of that nonsense about the 7th being the bastard stepchild of Mahler symphonies. They know that's rubbish.

The sound on the link is fantastic, almost of a CD quality^

Enjoy!

Not a fan. This sounds breathless and lacking in depth, compared to Harding's performance of M7 with the BRSO just months ago. A measurement of the timings confirmed my suspicions. They look like this: I -19:25; II - 15:40; III - 8:55 (like Abbado); IV - 12:05; V - 16:15. Why so fast when Harding's two existing Mahler recordings on Harmonia Mundi are nowhere so 'breathless'?

I would buy a CD or download of Harding's M7 from Munich, but not this one - unless they do a studio recording with somewhat more broad tempi (except for the second movement, which seemed fine as it was).

My "awesome" was in response to your words, John. I hadn't listened to it yet. We shall see. I wish BR Klassik would issue their Harding M7, but they're probably saving the 7th for Rattle.

Barry

Here are the correct timings of the Harding/SWRSO M7th:

21'35", 15'52", 9'04", 12'09", 16'54"

Total = 76 min.

That's not what I got, and I measured them off myself. I didn't include the dead space after any movement. Regardless, I wasn't crazy about it. It'll be a 'wait and see' situation for me, regarding any possible recording. I still liked the BRSO one more.

Barry,

Do your measurement again. The 1st movt is 21 min 35 seconds. ^_^

No John, I'm really not interested enough to bother. I'll take your word for it. As I said, I'll 'wait and see' for if and when it finally turns up on Spotify. I'm actually quite happy with the Vanska, where the first movement is a bit longer, SOOOOoooo, that when the main theme of the first movement shows up towards the end of the finale, Vanska brings it in at a slower, not faster tempo. To me, that makes a whole lot of sense.

I thought the first Nocturne (second movement) was best one on this Harding performance.

Just for the record, both of Harding's M7ths with BRSO and SRSO run 76 min.

Fair enough. Whatever the reasons, the BRSO one made a lot bigger impression on me. If HMU issues the SwRSO 7th, I'll check it out on Spotify. For the mean time, I'm looking forward to the Y. Sado/Tonkunstler M7, as well as an eventual Bychkov/Czech Phil. one. I imagine someday there will be a Jaap van Zweden one. A Dudamel remake with the N.Y. Phil. would be nice too.

Don’t forget about the eventual Paavo Järvi one, if the alleged news of him doing a cycle is true.

How is he with the 7th?

I have the Paavo Jarvi/Frankfurt DVD that has M7 and M8. The M7 is great. He sounds less comfortable with the 8th, but it was just his first rodeo with that work. When he gets around to doing it in Zurich, it should sound really good in there. Also, now that J. Nott is conducting in Geneva, it would be great if he did an M8 in the excellent acoustics of the Victoria Hall there.
