Title: Today´s best Bruckner conductors.

I have been talking to some friends on the subject of today´s better Bruckner conductors.

Although the consensus on those of the past is easy, those of today seem more elusive.

Which are your candidates ?

I very much like the one or two recordings each by Thielemann, Zander, Nagano, even Norrington, but I suppose one must turn to the older generation of Haitink and Barenboim.  The best of the former are surely his mid-60s Fifth, and 1978/1981 Seventh and Ninth.  Barenboim's BPO Ninth is a really great recording.

I think that the Dennis Russel Davies recordings with the Linz Brucknerhaus Orchestra are quite good. I also find Harnoncourt to be very interesting with Bruckner. He could ALMOST make me believe in the necessity of a finale for the Bruckner 9th. Almost.

Blomstedt has done outstanding performances of Bruckner 8 in S.F. on at least two different occassions.

Barenboim does a great Bruckner 7th. I like his Chicago B9 very much too.
