Available versions of DLvdE will be compared on BBC Radio 3

Each Saturday, on radio 3's programme CD Review, the available [in the  u.k.] versions of a work are compared in the Building a Library segment [except during the summer when the Proms are on.]

Next Saturday, the work so treated is M's D.L.E.

Performances get steadily discarded throughout until there's either an out right library choice, tho there's sometimes room for a bargain-price choice, and a historical ditto.

The prog should be available from BBC iPlayer for 7 days after the broadcast.

I assume that "DLE" is short for "Das Lied von der Erde". If so, please tell me that they're NOT going to make Ferrier/Patzak/Walter their number one pick. That one is sooooo tired, and sooooo predictable.

You are correct. I was using the same principle by which we don't write Washington, DoC.

The prog is next Saturday, in the very capable hands of Stephen Johnson. Thankfully, I'm not privy to his thoughts and will have to wait.  a la groucho.

I once heard a live Ozawa/BSO/Quasthoff/? DLVDE. It was totally mesmerizing from start to finish and Ozawa's penchant for bringing out all the details was amazing. I think he would make a fantastic recording of DLVDE. Why has he not done this yet?

I think there are a lot of elements involved in deciding who records what and when.

Schedules of performers, existing plans of companies, state of the market, et cetera.

The one the reviewer plumped for was Horenstein, 1972 vintage, with Alfreda Hodgson, John Mitchinson, (BBC Northern SO / Horenstein BBC Legends).

A controversial choice, if the responses on the R3 MB are anything to go by. I have it on my shelves but I'm not sure I've ever listened to it. Now's as good a time as any, I suppose....

I wouldn't call it MY favorite but I've heard worse, I suppose. Funny, for a more obscure British performance, I would have chosen the Janet Baker/Raymond Leppard one.
