« on: November 25, 2008, 03:30:33 PM »
A new organ wil be installed at the Golden Hall of Vienna's Musikverein, built by Rieger Orgelbau. The nstrument is going to have 86 stops on 4 Manuals and Pedal.

Great. Now they can go back and dub in the new organ for:

M2 - Bruno Walter, 1948;

M2 - Maazel/Sony (I think they might have dubbed in a different organ on this one anyway)

M2 - Abbado/VPO/DG (this one has almost no organ)

M2 - Boulez/VPO (again, almost zero organ)

M8 - Maazel (they used the Boston organ, but it's still too little)

Thanks Vienna for screwing up so many Mahler recordings that require an organ. Thanks to those conductors to agreeing to such sub-standard facilities. I no longer own any of those recordings above, and won't unless somebody fixes their wimpy organ sounds.

The Mehta/VPO M2 was recorded in the Sofiensaal with an electronic organ, while the Kaplan/VPO M2 has the Berlin Philharmonie organ dubbed into it.

Well, the waiting for our Freiburg's Konzerthaus to getting an organ at all will be infinite. Four large half-round oak panels stand wher the architect figured an organ can be. Every time an organ is in the score the SWR symphony orchestra use an electronic fake dingy. Analogue, with sub-standard speakers, that is. Listen to the Gielen M2 and and M8. It's a pity for such actually well-crafted performances. But that's provincial orchestral mangement, and a pity that conductors accept decisions by people who can't listen and don't hear what's real and what's not.
