I think, the truer to the music, the less rugged. The more the renderer's self is in the picture, the less of Mahler... ;D

You are actually quite correct. Truth be told, the conductor is like a reputable translater of notable fiction, but he doesn't necessarily need to seek the author's intention word for word, instead he must find a way for it to fit comfortably in its new language, which is none other then the conductor's method.
