Title: new members,old topics
Post by: Ivor on April 22, 2007, 04:37:43 PM
it's hardly my place as a newbie (how do I get to the next stage, btw?).

Nevertheless I'd like to welcome the newest members - the more the merrier - and I for one hope you'll find things to say about any of the old topics,  as well as starting fresh ones.

Just thought I'd agree with myself.

it seems to me that once a thread has sunk beyond the first page,it very rarely returns.

A shame.

Ivor, the more posts you make, the higher the status (see post count under your name)  :)

Ahhhh ..... more stars = higher status. I always wanted high status. Can I win prizes too?  ;D

Actually, I'm kinda perturbed that I no longer have just one star. There is an elegance to just one star. Multiple stars make for a rather ostentatious exhibitionistic display, don't you think? Discussion board bling. 8)

As Patton said, four stars don't look so bad. ;D

I just wanted to resurrect this as new members have arrived.

I still want to recommend that new members look thru old threads - at least on this thread that is easy to do- as they could find stuff they want to say soemthing about.

btw, I'm unclear why a red warning pops up about posts not being made for at least 120 days.

More members joining, so this thread comes back up, for obvious reasons. :D

Being a five star member, I won't even say hello until you have two stars. We don't begin discussing Mahler until I see three stars.  ;)

Thanks for the warm words of welcome. In logical order, I would have responded to Barry, whose many contributions I've btw enjoyed (not least in the old threads that prompted me to join in the first place), but I'm here for Mahler mostly and I think I've got not even a full star as of yet.  ;D

"I'll be back."

As you can see, I'm one of those newer members who looks through earlier postings.
There is a lot to be learned by reading what others have thought about subjects near to your heart.
So, thanks to all who have posted many comments on many subjects.  Your thoughts continue to enrich others!

Thanks to John H for resurrecting this thread.  I didn't even have to go back several pages to discover it either, it goes a long way towards my getting my first star.   ;D

I second Ivor's original suggestion here--that new members feel free to bring up old topics.  The multi-starred may occasionally get a tad bored at hearing a previous topic brought up again, BUT they owe it to all of us relative newbies to share their experience and knowledge with us.

BTW, adulatory as that previous remark may sound to some, it is meant with all sincerity.  I have already learned a tremendous amount by reading earlier postings and the reactions to them.

So, onward new members and the multi-starred!  We all continue to learn together.

A welcome to more, newly-arrived, of a growing band.

A please start threads on what interests you [if nobody minds me saying.]

Sounds good to me!
Even when new members bring up topics that have been discussed before, the very act of "revisiting" an old topic often allows for new perspectives--either from the way a question is phrased, or just because by coming back to a topic, our thoughts have mellowed or fermented--and this allows for new ideas.
So, NEWBIES!--bring up any topic of interest to you!

Since I'm No. 180 ... ;)
When time allows, I will indeed look through the old(er) topics. I've been lurking on the board for some time now, and I remember that I had a thought or two to drop (with a hammer or two) on the board ... ;)

Wow - Mahlerian in-jokes already. I'm a three man personally.

perhaps someone could do something about the underabundance of threads not about recordings.

Ivor

How about Mahler information that appears in periodicals? Besides the usual musical review magazines, the Chicago Mahlerites and the Gustav Mahler Society of New York publish their own journals from time to time. Surely there must be some Bored members who belong to these or other such organizations--who could share with us items of interest that appear there.

Definitely three, Russ!  :D

Great topic...perhaps Scott maybe you would consider moving this thread into the "announcements" category where you have the other three threads?  That way it will be very accessible to all, both new and non-new members alike!

Not only are we up to 217 members now, but someone has already taken up the thought of this thread.

That was  for all members in general, and newer members particularly, to look back thru the threads. We may find past threads in case we find something we want to talk about that has already been broached.

And, whisper it, that might also be true of fairly recent recordings and not only the very very latest from Indonesian radio via amplitudinouswaveformultracable.streampod.  :o  ;)
