A friend of mine works for Amoeba Records in Berkeley and puts rare product up for sale on E-Bay and Amazon. They received a pristine copy of the  box set of Mahler symphonies from the Amsterdam (Concertgebouw) Mahler Festival in the latter 1990s that used used various different conductors and orchestras (Muti/VPO M4; Haitink/BPO M6; Rattle/VPO M7, etc.). It sold on E-Bay to a buyer overseas for nearly one thousand dollars!  FYI.

I told him I'd buy it if it came down to $200.

I had noticed how this set was very expensive used, as well. However, I ordered it from my library as something called an Interlibrary Loan...and another library let me borrow it! I don't think it's worth $1000, but it is an exceptional set. I think it's interesting hearing the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic perform in the Concertgebouw. Like you, Barry, if I could score one cheaper...I'd go for it.
