I don't mean to be a 'snob' about this, but I just don't see the necessity for an endless procession of recordings of the 'chamber version'. There's plenty in Mahler's own version that's 'chamberish' already, including almost the entire "der Abschied". Surely the contrast between the 'bigger' moments - such as the first song - and the rest of the work was an entirely intentional idea on Mahler's part. Sorry, but I just don't get it.
