John,
John, are you having trouble with trying to translate the German, or is it a problem with the intent of the interview after translation? If it's translation, Internet Explorer version 8 has a translation engine. At the top right, click on the down arrow under "Page" and on the pull-down menu, click on "Translate with Live Search".

John,
The translation Russ pointed to should be clear enough.
Things mentioned that I found interesting (and didn't know about):
- Zinman mentions that Mahler quotes from his previous works. He also finds that some motives are characters that show up in every symphony showing their journey.
- Carpenter suffered with creating his version, making several version of it until a friend of Zinman, Gordon Peters conducted the first performance.
- Carpenter used bits of Mahler's previous symphonies.
