Title: New Inbal/Czech Philharmonic Cycle Next Year (!?!?!)
Post by: etucker82 on March 09, 2010, 11:22:27 PM
That's the word coming from Prague.  Now that Eliahu Inbal will be chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, their first major project is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a season-long Mahler cycle which will be recorded.   Let's hope this is as good in practice as it sounds like it might be on paper.

From an interview:

What plans do you have for the Czech Philharmonic, and is there any one thing you are particularly excited about?
“As I said, I will place some stress on Czech music, because people expect us when we go abroad to play Dvorak, Smetana, Suk, Martinů, Janáček, and we will do that, without any doubt. But we will absolutely present what I call the ‘great repertory’ – from Mozart, Beethoven to Mahler and Brückner and Strauss and so on. We will do that, and I’m very excited about the project of conducting and recording all of Mahler’s symphonies in 2010-2011. Because for me this is always a big occasion. Mahler is the greatest symphonist of all time. What Beethoven was for the 18th-19th century, Mahler was for the 19th-20th century.”
This is one of the Czech philharmonic’s previous recordings of Mahler – his eighth symphony in E flat major being performed in 1982. Prague awaits Mr Inbal’s arrival, and the realization of his plans.

Hooray!!! ;D :D ;D ;D

Inbal/CPO combination sounds much more promising than Macal/CPO or even Kobayashi/CPO combination, both of which Exton has recorded for the symphonies. I'll bet that this is going to be really, really good.

Which recording company will be involved in the project?

Exton again?

To me, Inbal's Mahler has always been consistent, reliable, and never disappointing.

I like his remakes of M3rd and M9th with NHK SO very much. I heard him conducting M8th with TMSO and that one too was pretty good.

My fingers are crossed 8).

John,

That's one of my favorite M8's -- perhaps my absolute favorite.  I am most enthusiastic about this cycle!  ;D

how should i pronounce inbal's first name?
EE-Lye-uh-hu, EE-LEE-uh-hu (hew), down home it would be ee-LYE-a-hew, but i wonder what it really is.

David,

I've heard it pronounced by some pretty reliable radio announcers as:

el–ee–AH–hu (with a very light, secondary accent on the first syllable)

If this MP3 link still works, you can hear an example here:

http://old.radio.cz/mp3/podcast/en/arts/080222-eliahu-inbal-the-new-chief-conductor-of-the-czech-philharmonic.mp3

Since this podcast includes an interview with Mr. Inbal himself, I imagine it's authoritative.

It's e-li-YAH-hu, pretty much as James said.  It helps to be a Hebrew speaker, but really any Jew who goes to a Passover seder would know how to pronounce it since Eliahu is Hebrew for Elijah, who plays an enormous role in the Passover Seder.

Thanks for the info.

It's interesting that Inbal will tackle the most difficult symphonies first with 9th, 6th, and 3rd. But that means I will get my favorite ones first too ;D :D.
