To the Barbican tonight to hear MTT with the LSO give M2. I found myself well-rewarded, with MTT giving the piece plenty of welly and a wonderful performance from all, but especially the chorus. I've always found the SFSO cycle a bit bloodless - perhaps I'll have to turn up the volume!
Cheers,
Nick

Yes, it's a bit of a low level recording. The ending of it is great, however, as is the climax to the first movement. I just don't care for MTT's weird slow-down towards the end of the scherzo - after the scherzo's main climax. Neither do I fancy his generally slow tempi during soft and quiet passages. Overall, I like the Blomstedt/SFSO one better. But Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is a knock-out to listen to!
