John,

I wouldn't pay that much for a cycle conducted by Mahler himself. well, maybe - if you gave him tons of rehearsal time, and the best singers and orchestras on earth.

That was the cheap set.
The second one on offer is for $2,155.70 :o

You can buy many of the records in that box at mahler150.com, but, I guess, if you want then as a box set, you'll have to pay (or wait until you find a cheaper set).

The set can still be obtained from Japan, but even then it's quite expensive (some $ 150,-): http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/3600542 (http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/3600542)
Some 8 years ago, it was readily available in The Netherland, for about 60 euro's. I wish I'd gotten it back then...

I have the box set shown in the alternate picture on the Amazon site. I would gladly sell it for half of the asking price. ;D
I bought mine several years ago from an Australian website. IIRC, it was about $60 or so.

I really like seeing "deals" like that when I have one to sell. I've sold several CDs or DVDs of things I no longer wanted/needed on Amazon at a substantial profit because those hair-brained offers make mine look so good. If I wanted to sell that set, I'd probably price it @ $99.99.

very nice package!
