I think the 2nd or the 9th.
Thoughts?

Both M2 & M9 are excellent choices; the Amsterdam Concertgebouworkest will be playing dLvdE, which also is an appropriate choice on that very sad day, to say Farewell....Forever. I think I'll go for "Das Lied".

Abbado is performing LvdE and the Adagio from the 10th at Berlin...I'll be there, as there are no hints at the Lied being performed again at Lucerne. This will be the very first time he'll conduct the LvdE, having conducted only the 6th mov. a few (not many) times in the past.

How about the 8th? Perhaps an unorthodox choice. But in Mahler's own words: ""Imagine the universe beginning to sing and resound...It is no longer human voices; it is planets and suns revolving."

I'd choose M2, for I feel that's what GM would want.

The concert will be broadcasted live on the french-german TV ARTE .I've read that a DVD is expected.

M8. If you're going, go with a bang! And it was also his greatest triumph in his music.
-
How about the piece on which Mahler was working when he died...M10?
The Houston Symphony is performing M10 Cooke this weekend. I will be attending 2 of the 3 performances.
-
Das Lied would be my pick!

R.I.P. Gustav
Currently, I play the whole of the works in cycles. I happened to have reached No.2 [on the 10th cycle].
I'm also hoping to play No.10 just because, as said, it was what he was working on, and might have been somewhere in his unconscious this day one hundred years ago.
I'm just so grateful for his legacy.

The 10th of course and then the 4th.
I am a 10th fanatic so that was obvious, for some unexplained reason I just had to couple that with the 4th, perhaps his most gentle symphony after one of the more turbulent ones.

I will report that I could not settle on just one - while working today I've listened to 2, 3, 10, 1, 8 and before sleeping am finishing up the 9th.
I'm curious how others have remembered Mahler today?

I listened to the Ludwig/Wunderlich/Klemperer dLvdE and watched the M2 from the Leipzig Mahler festival on the Internet.
Six symphonies in a day, Randall, I'm impressed. I can't remember listenening to more than 3.

Mahler who? ;D

6 symphonies in a day? :o
I listened to M1-7 on a very, very long trip but I can't exactly recommend it... Sometimes listening to everything at once takes away from the music. I didn't have too much time yesterday but fit in Das Lied, M2, and M6. (Which probably seems like I just went for his best known works but I normally don't spend as much time with the latter two as I should).
-
Yes, it's a lot of Mahler in one day... but working from home does have that nice side benefit! :)
Cheers,

Mahler's music is so connected to my psychological and emotional state, that I cannot jump fro a symphony to another.I'm generally in an obsession with a symphony for several days or weeks. Now it's M8,so i'll wait the last concert of Leipzig festival.

Sometimes (often) when I listen (really listen) to an M symphony, I'm totally drained afterwards, and there is nothing I want to hear after that. I just want silence.

Yes, I'm like that sometimes.
