This is fun, we should Twitter this. The Staatskapelle sounds fabulous. THE most underrated Mahler orchestra on the planet.

..... wow!! - the end of the first movement was unbelievable!

.  .   .  2nd Mvt.: strings sound wonderful.

.   .    .  3rd Mvt.: that's the right tempo! Great woodwinds. The "posthorn" solo could be a tad farther away, but the trumpet player sounds quite good.

.   .    .   4th Mvt.: Paasikivi's tone could stand to be just a tad darker for my liking, but she sounds plenty expressive. She reminds me a bit of Von Otter (Boulez M3).

.    .       5th Mvt.: Good tam-tam at the orchestral interlude in the middle of the 5th movement ("bim-bam"). Kids and Women sound good.

.    .    .   Adagio: Sorry, but I had to miss a good chunk of this. I'm at the part where tempo picks up in this movement, and Salonen is doing an excellent job with the gear changes. The trumpet sound is just right, blending nicely with the high clarinets (without burying them). Great horns and low brass too.

.    .    .   the big brass chorale and ending were excellent!!! This time, Salonen didn't double the last five strokes of the unison timpani with bass drum (I like that effect, but Mahler didn't write that). All in all, this is an outstanding Mahler 3.

Thanks Arte Web Live - you saved me an expensive trip to Leipzig (that I can't afford).

I'm trying to get back and watch this, but the flash movie won't play, gives some French text I can't understand (and being Flash, Google Translate won't work on it). Anyone know what's up with it? I liked the parts I saw already.

Herb,

The gist of the French text is:

"Dear Public: Our rights to this program have expired and we can no longer broadcast it."

James, Herb,

The M3 and M2 and M10 are no longer available (more than 7 days old). The M8, M4, M6, M5, M1, DLvdE, and M7 are still available at MDR.DE (click on the "Mahler-Konzerte hier sieben Tage lang nachsehen" and then "Liste" on the next page). If you want to watch M7 you'll have to do it today, Saturday (it'll be replaced by M9, scheduled for live performance at 20:00 CET tonight (2 PM US Eastern))

Happy listening
Roffe
