This gets better as it goes. He's very subtle, and his soft touch seems a bit at odds with the brute force of Pittsburgh's brass section. But perhaps the answer to that lies in what he says regarding dynamics. Give him a try.

I agree with Honeck's comments about the effectiveness of "soft climaxes"--they don't all need to be loud to say something.
His comments about the positioning in Mahler's orchestra are also interesting: a precursory effect to stereophonic sound?
