Title: Revisiting M5
Post by: merlin on April 19, 2013, 05:39:14 PM
One of the great things about taking a long break from listening to particular pieces is how amazing an experience it can be upon returning.

That's what happened for me with M5 Bernstein/DG last night.  Both the music and SQ blew me away.  Next up is M7.

I've always loved the Bernstein VPO/M5 on DG.  It gets its fair share of criticism for having slow tempos, but I think it's a wonderful recording.  The VPO plays magnificently.

Yes, indeed -- "plays magnificently" is almost an understatement...  ;D

I prefer Lenny on DG for M1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, and with the BPO for 9, to any other recordings.  The remastering of the box sets is superb!

Barbirolli's M5 near-mint vinyls i've bought for a low price (sth about 10$) on ebay had made my come back to Mahler's music. Definitely one of my most beloved records i've ever heard...too bad that sir John's M6 and M9 on vinyl cost too much...
