Title: Dudamel to Perform M8 in Salzburg
Post by: James Meckley on July 23, 2013, 05:49:18 PM
Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra will perform Mahler's Symphony No. 8 this Wednesday as part of their residency at the 2013 Salzburg Festival. The performance will be Webcast the following day (Thursday 25 July) by Medici TV and should remain available for 90 days.

I was pretty impressed by his Blu-ray of M8 released last year (two orchestras and over a thousand performers), but I'm hoping this performance with a smaller ensemble will allow for a bit more interpretive flexibility.

Thanks, James.

Previously, I was hesitant to commit to the abilities of Dudamel, but biographical information expressing his appreciation for Mahler has encouraged me to hear his performances.

The Blu-ray performance has a wonderful presentation of the "Mater Gloriosa," which, for me was so dramatic that I'd be surprised if it can ever be equaled.

I'm looking forward to Dudamel's next performances.

For some reason they've changed the Webcast date to Friday, 26 July at what appears to be 1:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time. The concert probably required more post-production time than anticipated.

James,
Thanks again for posting this.
I've just finished watching it, and it's another wonderful performance!
The "Dude" can definitely perform Mahler very well.
