Title: Klemperer/Philharmonia seating arrangement
Post by: mahlerite54 on October 20, 2013, 10:45:49 PM
My favorite Mahler #2 recording is Klemperer/Philharmonia (EMI Great Recordings of the Century)

Can anyone shed any light on the seating arrangement of the Philharmonia for this recording? I hear the violin section appear to be seated on the right side, while the cello section appear to be seated on the left side?

I understand the the second violins might seated to the right, but I really can hear the cello at the left.

I'm sure I have my stereo set up correctly.

Thanks!

mahlerite54,

Welcome to the Mahler Board!

Klemperer's typical set-up for his Mahler recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra was:

1) First violins far left
2) Second violins far right
3) Violas center right
4) Cellos center left
5) Basses left, behind the cellos and first violins

I just spot-checked the recording you mention with score in hand, and these placements are pretty much what I hear. The very beginning is a bit confusing, however, as the second violins and violas way overbalance the firsts, making it sound as if most of the high strings are on the right. Balance improves as the symphony progresses.

I guess the same seating arrangement for his Das Lied Von Der Erde with the same orchestra.

I shall enjoy these wonderful recording much better. THANKS again.

This Klemperer M2 with the Bavarian RSO 1965 is $1.29 on Amazon MP3.  Similar time per movements as the Philharmonia recording.
