Title: Help me decide on a performance...
Post by: Leo K on November 12, 2007, 06:51:14 PM
I was talking to my cousin a couple weeks ago, and I hadn't seen her in years.  She has been ill for four years now and has suffered much.  I decided to start a correspondance and to send her some music.

She has a music degree and now teaches and conducts choir at a highschool, so I though the M8 is a no brainer, or perhaps even the M2.

I have an unopened Rattle M8/EMI...is this a good enough performance to give her?  Or should I find another?  Maybe the Chailly M8?

Send her Bertini M8th on EMI. That might be the best overall version.

But I have to confess I haven't heard the Rattle yet... ;)

John,
...although I heard a live broadcast of Rattle' M8th and that was very, very good.

I like Rattle's Part II better than his Part I. His Part I sounds a bit frantic in places - especially at the end of the "Gloria". Also, the "redbook" issue of Rattle's M8 doesn't sound all that great. However, that's much less a problem in Part II, than it is in Part I. Both Bertini and Rattle have glorious sounding orchestral postludes at the end of Part II. On the whole, I do like the Bertini better. But here's one thing you might want to consider:

.   .  .  burn Nagano for Part I - assuming that you own a copy - and Rattle for Part II. I find that they're complete polar opposites; and as such, have opposite strengths. For me, Rattle's big sounding childrens choir is the cement that holds much of Part II together. On the Nagano, the childrens choir is rather anemic sounding. Rattle clearly has the better tenor soloist as well (I really dislike Nagano's tenor). Nagano/Rattle - remember that. Hey, it's just a suggestion!

Barry, I don't own the Nagano, but what you suggest sounds good!

Re this one, does she mind much about performance as compared to the work? We need to know.

Hello Ivor!

No, I don't think she would be concerned about performance in this case...she knows Mahler, but I think she's rather new to the work.

  Hi leo.

  Another onsite simul., Leo.

I'd blast anyone with Bernstein in M8. Tho' I'd also recommend Horenstein (well I would, wouldn't I?!) for a real occasion.

  best wishes,

   Ivor

One not mentioned yet is the Wit on Naxos, an 8th which I absolutely love.
