Interesting pick. I was sure that they would want to go with any number of the younger, up and coming guys. But Muti at least hasn't fallen into the, "I'm older, so I have to conduct slower" syndrome. I hate that.
I imagine this means that Muti will want to expand his Mahler repertoire. He recorded the first with Philly, which was really pretty good. Then there's a Mahler 4th with the VPO from the 2000-something Amsterdam Mahler Festival, which is really very, VERY good. So, maybe good things will happen.

Yes, Muti's VPO concert of M4th during the Mahlerfest was outstanding; gentle, warm, and plenty of "humanity", with gorgeous playing and singing.
