When I was 16, I started listening to some contemporary composers. I purchased the first 6 symphonies of Henze which was released on DG'S 20th century collection. One of the symphonies had a movement opening which sounded very similar to some of the Mahler's fiery openings, IN PARTICULAR (5th, II). I believe the Henze symphony that I'm speaking of is the 3rd, but can't be sure. Has anyone heard Henze's symphonies?

The Third opens with a triangle tap and some light, high-pitched sounds. Perhaps you are referring to the second movement of the Second, or perhaps the start of the Fifth, which might be compared to a dim recollection of the opening of Mahler 2, but honestly I don't hear anything that the two obviously have in common beyond some very basic qualities (i.e. loud and fast, etc).

One of Henze movement open similarly as the second mov. of the M5. I'd have to listen again. I do remember that after the opening it became extremely atonal, it was only the opening that was relatively consonant.

If that is what it sounded like to you, then it's your call. I think perhaps you are referring to the second movement of the Second Symphony, which I mentioned previously--but I checked out all of them and none of them strike me as similar to M5(2) in any meaningful way. Different people hear these things differently! :)
