Title: any Mahleriana for Christmas?
Post by: john haueisen on December 25, 2008, 01:16:42 PM
Just as a simple holiday-related conversation topic, did anyone get anything Mahler-related for Christmas?

I finally have a copy of Fischer's M6 (Budapest).

Sorry, I meant Jansons. I was reading Barry's review of Vonk's M4, and he mentioned Macal's M4, so I must have had Macal on the brain. I, too have no Macal SACDs as they are expensive and not readily available. I picked up the Vonk M4 a few days before Xmas.

Damfino, I've made the same slip-up myself many times.
But thanks for the reminder about the Vonk--that should be on my wishlist.
I saw Vonk conduct the Dresden Staatskapelle years ago when they visited Columbus, Ohio.
My wife was stunned when they played the entire Bruckner 4 without scores--ALL FROM MEMORY!!  We don't see things like that very often.

I received the Boulez M8/Berlin Staatskapelle as well as the Boulez M2/Berlin Staatskapelle DVD.  I guess they thought I needed a lot of Boulez this Christmas!

Ben, I think you will really enjoy the Boulez M2 dvd.
In addition to a fine performance, there are the beautiful Diana Damrau and the very focused Petra Lang who sing their roles very well.
Be sure to watch the minutes following the performance:  Pierre Boulez, the human metronome who rarely shows emotion--ACTUALLY SMILES!
