I found this photo of Rattle's M8 at the CBSO website. Notice the offstage brass standing behind the chorus - just in front of the organ. You'll see the tam-tam to the left side of the stage. It looks all of the utility percussion, plus the celeste, might be up on some kind of elevated riser on the left side. It apprears that Rattle's hair was going sideways that day. The childrens chorus are in yellow for the first day of dear hunting season. The front line of the Chicago Bears are standing up front, with Rattle.

I like the detail in your picture Amphissa. The only better one I know of is on the front cover of Abbado's M8

Cristian's picture, although actually, I do have a DVD of this PROMS performance with Rattle leading the youth orchestra and absolutely huge choral forces. The kids play very well and it is a quite creditable showing.

The most breathtaking picture of the Live M8 was the one with Lenny Bernstein and LSO. Yep, that cover from the original Lenny M8s' vinyl on Sony/CBS.
Robert Shaw's with Atlanta Forces isn't shabby either.

Yeah, I agee. I've always been impressed by the cover on the original LP's for Bernstein's LSO M8. To my ears, the performance is pretty darn impressive as well - distortion and all.

What is thought the top three M8's of all time for sound only. Solti's can't be on the list, its sound is outdated. Would Abbado's Berlin be on the list, though it is expensive and hard to find.

Some folks would say yes. I find it to be possibly THE dullest M8 ever to have been recorded. For a really good, "understated" M8 (if that's not a self cancelling thought), I'd recommend the Haitink in its DSD remastering (for SACD) from Pentatone. That one has very beautiful sound, and is just more "with it", in my opinion. With the Abbado, I dont' even feel that DG's "dream team" of soloists lives up to the hype. Wait and see if Abbado ever remakes the 8th in Lucerne - where there's a solid organ and plenty of choir space. His new meds should help do the trick too.

I'm assuming that this is a CD reissue that hasn't been brought to the U.S. (I've never seen it). Regardless, I like how they placed the original cover in a slant like that. It's still fun to look at that cover on 12" LPs

Yea, it's issued in either England or Germany, dont remember which but you can find it in EU and Japan. It's actually coupled with KTL with JBaker, same with the box set and the current individual pressing.
Since the pic is not very clear I would like to point out for others that the people in white are kiddies and ladies, while the men way behind are in black suit, of course.
Again, I wish this concert were filmed. It must had been a hell of M8!
