Oh, he was a man of such extreme emotions, such extreme feelings, just like myself ;) :-X.
I listened to the Eighth last night and am listening to DLVDE right now. Couldn't resist posting my feeling at this moment.

It is a huge swing. I think that Mahler basically went from his most "public" work, to one of his most "private" ones (Funf Ruckert Lieder and Kindertotenlieder are perhaps his most private works). At any rate, there certainly wasn't any drop-off in quality.
