Title: Dallas SO/Litton M5 on Dorian - opinions?
Post by: akiralx on September 29, 2009, 04:14:12 AM

I just came across this in a used CD store, the recording dates from around 1993.  I like Litton's M3 and M10, any opinions on this one?

I too like his M10 (Carpenter ed.) very much, but I have a mixed feeling about the fifth. It is an OK reading but the sound quality isn't too flattering; the brass is too prominent, strings weak. It is also too closely miked lacking warmth, body, and atmosphere.

That's all I can remember  :-[.

I mostly agree. It's a decent 5th, but not nearly as good as Litton's later Mahler on Delos. I just got the newest Markus Stenz M5 on Oehms, and that's really something special. It's a lot more money though. I wish SOMEBODY would isse the Litton/Dallas M8 that was taped for Delos. That's over a dozen years old now, but it was a great performance. I went to two nigts of that in Dallas.

NOTE:

I split the Stenz discussion this into its own topic since we will hopefully have some separate reviews, including mine.
