I happened to notice that the Jaap van Zweden/New York Philharmonic Mahler 5th is now available on iTunes. I can't swear to it, but Phil Smith is still on trumpet, but it was the first season back without Phil Myers as principal horn. I'm not too far into the performance, but the first movement sounds good. But the orchestra itself is competing against itself...even with only download versions considered: Maazel, Gilbert...and now this. But, hey! It's fine. I have the L.P.O. in-house issue of their M5 with J. van Zweden. It really flew under the radar, as I think it's pretty much excellent. Of course, the L.P.O. had plenty of practice playing M5 under Tennstedt, and who knows who else.

That's Chris Martin on trumpet. I heard them do this concert in Ann Arbor in November of that year. Where I was sitting, I received the full force of their brass section. It was delightful.

D'oh! You're right, it IS Martin. I made it the rest of the way through the performance; and I liked it. I bet that was quite the concert experience.
Looks like with Apple's new Classical Music app, I also stumbled upon the same forces doing Mahler's First. I've only made midway through the first movement...but it's even better. Zweeden manages those contrasts nicely. So the spooky middle section was magical and creepy. Very evocative.
