Haitink's Concertgebouw S8 came from the middle or latter 1980s. It was very good for that time. A whole boat-load of others came after his. A concert recording of his BRSO from 2006 performance is on Youtube, if you want to check it out. I think it sounds pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1D-MNLNgNo&t=1611s

You're entering a world of pain.

Admittedly I haven’t heard Haitink’s Shostakovich. How does it compare to other well-regarded recordings like those of Vasily Petrenko?

Gustav Mahler and Related Discussions / Big release day this Friday (03/01/2024)

There will be three things coming to streaming services this Friday that I'm excited to hear: S. Rattle/BRSO/Br Klassik Mahler 6; Y. Sado/Vienna Tonkunstler Mahler 7, and the Haitink/BRSO/BR Klassik Shostakovich 8th. I'm prepared to spend money to support any of these by buying hard copies, if I feel they're strong enough to justify the purchase.

I'm really looking forward to hearing this release. If it weren't for the second tier soprano, I really, really like Sado's M4. I also think he's made as good an argument - musically speaking - as one can make for reinserting "Blumine" into the second movement position in M1. It should be up on Spotify in seven more days (today is Feb. 23).

I have the Paavo Jarvi/Frankfurt DVD that has M7 and M8. The M7 is great. He sounds less comfortable with the 8th, but it was just his first rodeo with that work. When he gets around to doing it in Zurich, it should sound really good in there. Also, now that J. Nott is conducting in Geneva, it would be great if he did an M8 in the excellent acoustics of the Victoria Hall there.

Don’t forget about the eventual Paavo Järvi one, if the alleged news of him doing a cycle is true.

How is he with the 7th?

Fair enough. Whatever the reasons, the BRSO one made a lot bigger impression on me. If HMU issues the SwRSO 7th, I'll check it out on Spotify. For the mean time, I'm looking forward to the Y. Sado/Tonkunstler M7, as well as an eventual Bychkov/Czech Phil. one. I imagine someday there will be a Jaap van Zweden one. A Dudamel remake with the N.Y. Phil. would be nice too.

Just for the record, both of Harding's M7ths with BRSO and SRSO run 76 min.

No John, I'm really not interested enough to bother. I'll take your word for it. As I said, I'll 'wait and see' for if and when it finally turns up on Spotify. I'm actually quite happy with the Vanska, where the first movement is a bit longer, SOOOOoooo, that when the main theme of the first movement shows up towards the end of the finale, Vanska brings it in at a slower, not faster tempo. To me, that makes a whole lot of sense.

I thought the first Nocturne (second movement) was best one on this Harding performance.

Do your measurement again. The 1st movt is 21 min 35 seconds. ^_^
