Herbig/Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrucken Mahler Ninth
« on: March 08, 2007, 07:38:37 AM »
I must admit that this is really a fine M9th recording. As in the M6th CD that the same conductor/orchestra/label made a few years back this M9th boasts sensible tempo, balance, and admirable level of forward momentum. It also has a nice, natural flow, some beautiful phrasing. The playing is excellent, the sonics warm and with plenty of ambiance. There is not a single moment I can criticize. This might have been a live Bernard Haitink recording in 70's albeit a different orchestra. Timings are,

27:22
16:57
12:11
23:24

Highly recommended.

Actually I think this one is better than the recent Barenboim now available on Warner Classics.

The Klemperer M9 on EMI just got reissued on their "Great Performances Of The Century" series. John, you didn't mention what label this Herbig one is on.
