Set of 78s of M2 under Fried sold on eBay
« on: January 08, 2012, 11:11:53 AM »
A friend of mine is an eBay-watcher.

He told me yesterday th't that set of M2 on 78s, that is, the first edition of the world's first recording of a Mahler Symphony sold recently.

Anyone want to guess how much? Leaving aside the expert eBay history researchers :-)

Not knowing whether they were sold using dollars or Euros, in either case I'd hate to pay the shipping for something as heavy as this recording would be!

The figure I heard was in pounds.

I couldn't resist checking out eBay.  There is another complete set in a bound album currently up for auction in $US with one bid on it.  I won't be a spoiler, but my jaw hit the keyboard when I saw the price  :o

Unfortunately, I couldn't find it. But if someone is willing to pay $200+ for Lenny's DG recording of a single symphony, I can only imagine that the price is $1,000+ or maybe even 1,000+ pounds.

Hey, anyone willing to pay $1,800 for a complete set of Lenny's DG recordings of M1 thru M9? LOL, just kidding.

That's a bit more expensive than the one just sold, at around £2000.

I wonder how many copies were ever pressed. Lovely to see what it looks like.

brunumb,

Now I realize why your jaw hit the keyboard. And the bidding isn't finished yet.

It's the result of offering something both much wanted and rare.

That's nearly £4,000.
