Hey, we finally have some new things to talk about. How 'bout live concerts?

Anybody have any live Mahler they're going to?  I'm going with a friend to hear the Stanford University S.O. do M2 in their new Bing concert hall in November. They'll have to bring in an electronic or digital organ, but it has plenty of space behind the stage for big choral forces.

Not Mahler, but closely related. Next week I'm going to the University of Georgia in Athens to hear a concert presented by a former student who's completing his DMA in conducting. The main work on the program will be the Symphony in E Major by Hans Rott, a work I've grown to love beyond all reason. It'll be my first chance to hear the work live.

I'll be conducting the Ninth in November with my university orchestra. Let the challenge begin.

I am going to two performances of DLvdE in Boston the end of October with Daniel Harding conducting the BSO and Christianne Stotijn and Michael Schade. I heard Stotijn give a breath taking Rückert LIeder with Julius Drake piano in Middlebury, Vermont a year and a half ago and spoke with her after the concert. She has been Haitink's favorite mezzo in recent years.

I am going to the Sunday afternoon matinee.  May have to miss to second half of my Spurs and West Ham match!

In this season in my general area, I could go see the Montreal Symphony Orchestra perform the 7th with Kent Nagano conducting. There is also the 1st and 9th with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Edward Gardner and Sir Andrew Davis conducting respectively. Interestingly there is also a performance of the 1st with the Ontario Philharmonic with Marco Parisotto in the same month as the TSO performance. The NAC Orchestra (in Ottawa) perform the 5th with Pinchas Zuckerman conducting.  I have not heard Mahler from any of these. Due to timing and expenses, I will most likely see the 9th and possibly the 7th, unlikely the 1st. The 5th... the NACO is the closest orchestra to me, but I *despise* Pinchas Zuckerman as a conductor. He isn't one! The NACO was a decent orchestra, but he has all but destroyed it, and I can't stand any of his conducting. If I were to go see him conduct Mahler, I fully expect to come away utterly disgusted and aghast at the this terrible state of affairs...

For music, I am very envious of people who live in NYC, Berlin, Vienna and other great musical capitals.

I'm going tonight to see DLvdE in Boston that was mentioned above. Daniel Harding conducting. It will be my first time seeing DLvdE live!
