All I want for Christmas...
« on: December 08, 2015, 02:32:14 PM »
I'm curious what my fellow Mahler fans have on their wish lists for this holiday season?

I'm hoping to find the new M6 from Daniel Harding and the old Bernstein DVD set under the tree this year. Well, my wish list is much longer than that, but one must prioritize.

Best wishes to all of you.

Herb

Those are good picks! The sound on the Harding M6 is a tad dry because the performance was at the Gasteig - known for it's less than stellar acoustics. But wow, what a scherzo. The slow movement is real good too. ANYWAY, to answer the question  .   .   .

If it weren't for the fact that I already own a few in the series, I'd love owning the dvd box set of the complete Paavo Jarvi/Frankfurt R.S.O. Mahler cycle.

My big Xmas treats this year are two non-Mahler mega-boxes from Sony:

1) Glenn Gould Remastered: The Complete Columbia Album Collection (81 CDs)

2) Igor Stravinsky: The Complete Columbia Album Collection (56 CDs and one DVD)

Both are done in the "original jackets" manner and were remastered in whole (Gould) or in part (Stravinsky) by Andreas K. Meyer, the man who did such great work on the Bernstein/Columbia Mahler symphony set.

What I really want: ALL of the Bernstein/Mahler on Sony/CBS/Columbia (the symphonies, some in duplicate, Das Lied, the songs where he accompanied on piano, everything) put on one convenient, high-quality, remastered Blu Ray Audio disk.

It's a non-Mahler item, but I will be getting the Solti Ring BD-A disc.

My employees always get me a large Amazon gift card for Christmas. I tend to use most of this for Mahler purchases. I'm looking at the Harding 6, and the Yannick Nezet-Seguin Mahler 10, too. Maybe picking up some of Donald Mitchell's Mahler books as well.

No one would get me music - Mahler or otherwise - so I've been treating myself to some Sibelius  :D

I don't know how invested you are in Sibelius, but I just picked up a phenomenal 7-cd set on Warner with historical recordings of the symphonies and more.  All in glorious mono. Most of it has been released before, but not in one convenient, cheap set.
