You’re right Barry, Dave seems hell bent on destroying the Vänskä recordings. He’s a charming fella, but I do also think his reviews can be too black and white.
Frankly, I wasn’t a fan of the I. Fischer M7 either, but I certainly wouldn’t rank it that low. If I were to give it the ol’ Classics Today treatment I would probably give it a 7/8. Fischer’s interpretation was a bit soft and detached, and the sound wasn’t up to par. Sometimes detached can work, like Boulez and Gielen, but it sounds to me like Iván isn’t doing the score proper justice. I agree with Dave on that part. I haven’t heard the CD/SACD, but I have heard it on lossless FLAC with good headphones on Idagio.
To each their own though. I don’t really like any of the Iván Fischers after M4, but I respect others’ opinions. I do think Iván has something to offer, and that’s important these days. It certainly isn’t any old Mahler cycle.
