Regarding the N.Y. Phil. one. I thought it was cool that they included the contrabassoon. On the negative side, such a small gong does no justice, even in this reduced setting. The pitch simply isn't low enough and there isn't enough 'wash' of sound. Also, if the chugging string parts aren't going to be there, why use the ultra slow tempo? I don't know - I guess it's better than nothing, but this sort of thing really annoys me. They're asking you to fill in the blanks. If one doesn't already know the work, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
While the tempo is quite slow, I enjoyed the Baltimore one more. It just worked better.
