Haitink/RPO M2nd (1990) video
« on: October 24, 2021, 06:28:27 PM »
IMO the late Bernard Haitink's finest moments as a Mahler interpreter/conductor were captured in this 1990 live concert of the Second Symphony <Resurrection>. It has everything - cogency, sweep, epic scale, fire, ecstasy, and panache. Even the recorded sound is great, unusual for a live archive.

Relish it!

I agree, I've known this video for years. This is a memorial concert taking place fifty years after the Rotterdam Blitz which destroyed much of the city. It's a breathtaking performance!

Interesting. He seems to have always done M2 quite well. I like his Dresden Staatskapelle recording of it on Profil, as well as his  Chicago Symphony one for CSO Live (I'm not crazy about his Chicago M1, M3 or M6), The timings on this Rotterdam one are much closer to his Dresden one.
