M9 Premiere
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:13:45 AM »
M9 premiered today in 1912.  (I celebrated by listening to a few recordings; Although I love everything Mahler wrote, this is my favorite piece by him).
What changes/directions do you think Mahler would have added to the symphony had he lived to undergo his normal process of revisions?

I'm no musicologist, but I have long wondered if he would have added more percussion 'highlights' (cymbals, triangle. etc.) to III.

Its hard to imagine the changes, for me Mahler 9 is perfect the way it is, and one of my favourite pieces of music of all time.

Had Mahler lived, I believe he might have made some changes in the orchestration of the middle movements.  At what spots and instrumental areas, I can't exactly say, but from what I hear, somehow I feel some changes might have been made.  I think he would have left the outer movements the way they are.
