Released today on the Alpha label is a collection of Mahler, Wagner, and Schubert excerpts transcribed for solo piano by Juliette Journaux. They're her own transcriptions too! "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" and an abridged version of "Der Abschied" are the Mahler transcriptions, and I think they're really well done. There's an excerpt from Wagner's Siegfried, and two Schubert lieder: "Wandrers Nachtlied," and "In der Ferne" from Schwanengesang. The other couple of excerpts aren't transcribed by her though.

Frankly, as much as I love my Mahler the song from Schwanengesang was my favorite of the bunch.

This is clearly a passion project, a sort of lieder ohne Worte of classic German lieder. She claims to be a huge admirer of Mahler and Schubert.

I thought it was a refreshing release. I'm really looking forward to seeing what else Journaux can produce in the future.
