OT: Bruckner 2 (a beautiful work indeed)
« on: January 28, 2008, 05:01:59 PM »
I am becoming enchanted with this work day by day...it may be my favorite Bruckner (at least in this moment!).  Igor has hipped me to the Tintner version on Naxos...a fine performance and a great introduction to the work.

Theres nothing like hearing Bruckner's 2 on a bright winter morning.

As much as B2 is a nice work, his "zeroth" symphony is even more enchanting. Beautiful and charming melodies in string abound in this work. Inbal's FRSO recording on Denon is hard to beat for that matter.

But then I love all of Bruckner's symphonies, especially when they are done so well as demonstrated by Barenboim/CSO/DG recordings.

Thanks, I will look into the 0 Symphony soon!

And I am just about to sample Barenboim's Bruckner very soon  :)

More tapes about to be prepared. I don't think Bruckner produced a symphonic dud. And that the 2nd is dreadfully, unaccountably undervalued,as are Zero, double-Zero and the 1st.

I've always liked the Bruckner 2nd.  The slow movement is beautiful, and I like the rest of it, too.  I don't even think I've heard a bad recording of it, either.

I did a survey of some B2 recordings as part of my review of Simone Young's SACD of it:

It is indeed a beautiful work.  Just avoid Eschenbach and Barenboim II.

I was just reading your survey the other day...it is a great help and I refer to it often...much thanks!
