Bruckner's 3rd 'haitink boxset'
« on: August 02, 2008, 02:37:24 PM »

Every other recording I have heard of this work angers me. In many Bruckner symphonies there is a type of tuneful jolly dancish part usually following after a more dramatic theme. The finally and scherzo of the 3rd have two of the most exquisite. The haitink plays them in his box set is prefect. Many other 3rds treats these delightful little tunes as part of the the whole dramatic picture, when it is quite possible that Bruckner meant them as a time out.

P.S. I used to frequent this sight under the name 'Wunderhorn'.

Hello Everyone!

I too have this box - for me the highlight is the Fifth, which is one of the finest ever, very fiery but spiritual as well.  On balance this is probably the best recorded cycle because there are no lemons at all, apart from perhaps the Eighth.  Though Haitink excelled himself later with the 1978 Seventh and 1981 Ninth.

And I have to confess that I've never heard the Third from this set, maybe because his VPO Third is so good, perhaps the best Bruckner symphony recording he has made.  But maybe also because I prefer the Second...
