Maazel/NYPO M6th...a first impression
« on: February 17, 2010, 01:01:32 AM »
The Mahler 6 from Maazel's new cycle is probably the best recorded 6th I've ever heard. And the performance, like the powerful 9th from this cycle, is a revelation in terms of detail and dynamics. This recording taught me more about this symphony than I've heard in a long time. It is amazing in terms of drama. It simply has to be heard to be believed.  If anything, listen to how the instruments are lovingly captured in the sonics.  I've never heard so much of the score as in this performance.  The instumentalists were truly playing from inspiration here.

Even those who don't like 18 minute Andantes may love what he does in the other movements.

It is easily my top M6 right now.  Just edging out Lenny's VPO account...yes, I am speaking the truth here!  At least to my ear  :-X  ;D  :-*

Todd,

I think I have this one.

Is it from June, 2005 with A/S order?

John,

Perhaps, I just downloaded it from the new NYPO Maazel Mahler cycle on iTunes, so I'm not sure of the year...I could check the digital booklet when I get home...but 2005 sounds like the time frame for this cycle.  It is in A/S order.  Could be possible it's from a different night.

No, Todd, just as I'm listening to the Finale from the remastered VPO M6...don't do that to me!  LOL! ;-)
I have not listened to the Maazel/NYPO M6 in great detail, but I agree that the sonics are quite delicious.  More later...can't ingest two M6 Finales before school...LOL

John,

The Maazel/NYPO M6 was released in July 2009, the same day that the M9 was.

HTH,

Michael,

I am told the Maazel M6 booklet said the performances are from June 2005, so these two recordings must be based on the same concert(s).

When are you gonna pull the trigger on the M2 that I've been raving about?!  ;D

Pretty soon I hope!  Although I think I need to hear Maazel's new M3 first!  :P ;)

Todd,

You should follow up the Maazel/NYPO M3 with the Alan Gilbert one. I think that Gilbert one is excellent, without being TOO fast throughout. It really hangs together well, and the NYPO play superbly for him. Give it a shot.

Hi Barry,

Is this the performance that you were talking about awhile back (where there was a link to hear it)?   I recorded it so I could hear it on my iPod and I wholeheartedly agree with you.  The pacing is about the best I've heard for this work, and I was pretty impressed on a second hearing too.  It's among my top M3's now.  Hopefully it finds an SACD release!
