Emi returns fire
« on: March 26, 2010, 03:26:20 PM »
After the disappointing selection put together by DG, Emi is going to return fire with something that looks like better (at least for him/her who is about to start his/her collection of Mahler recordings):

Sony/BMG should appear soon with their own bargain Mahler box.  Look for Bernstein, Maazel, and Levine (did I leave anyone out?).  Now the Mahler newbies will be presented with a difficult decision, and we will further confuse them with our diverse opinions! ;D

So far, it seems that no one has done this with Beethoven, Brahms, or Bruckner.  One of them should be next. ;D

When the info is released on what this EMI box set will include, please post it, someone.  ;-)
I wonder if they will be remasterings of anything?  The Barbirolli M6 hasn't seen a remaster since 2002, and who knows what advancements have been made in audio since then.  I would also think the Barbirolli M9 could use some work as well.  As for the others...I haven't heard 'em, so couldn't comment.

The EMI set (apologies for the quality of Google's translation):

EMI Box 150 birth anniversary
Mahler Complete Edition
(Limited Edition)
CZS-6089852 (16CD) \ 5600

Mahler EMI is certainly strong for a long time. Even compared with other major labels through 70 have the impression that if a head's up. Demonstrate the full strength of these recordings in the collection, so of course.
Look at the light,
No. 1 Giulini, Klemperer No. 2, The Rattle No. 3, No. 4 Horenstein, Tennstedt No. 5, No. 6 Barbirolli
The Rattle No. 7, No. Tennstedt No. 8, No. 9 Barbirolli, Klemperer song of the earth
Fischer-Dieskau singing of young men wandering & Furtwängler, Walter Ferrier singing and commemorate the dead child
Baker and Barbirolli Rückert songs, "Children's magical horn," Schwarzkopf, Fischer-Dieskau, George Szell

And rock-solid lineup of just that.
This song is this person has been holding it down pat to where. And three years ago by Pappano and services that fit Bosutorijji to record two new songs. EMI's complete works set to this strong sense of enthusiasm.

No surprises about the Barbirolli M6 and M9.  I wonder if these will be remastered?  The M6 hasn't been remastered since 2002, and I have no idea about the M9.

"I Dumped Into The World"   ;D  - that's fabulous!  Anyway, this looks to be a lot more intelligently put together than Universal's (DG) hodge-podge.

Really?  Although I think that the EMI one is put together pretty well, I prefer DG's set in most cases (excepting M7) or at the minimum find them to be a push (M3, M5, DLvdE).

"Really?"     .     .    .

Yes, I think so. Symphony vs. symphony; song cycle vs. song cycle; I believe that the EMI set wins on nearly every line. I know that you're a bigger fan of the Solti Mahler 8 than I am, Scott, but I still think it would have been better if UNI had decided to use one of the Abbado M7s, as well as the Sinopoli M8, instead. If they wanted to honor Solti, they could have used his LSO Mahler 1.
