This appears to be a different performance than the one available on DVD.  The DVD lists January 27 & 28, 1991.  HMV lists this CD as from several days earlier.  I am not a big fan of the DVD, but have read elsewhere that the earlier performance was much more inspired.

I hope that's true. The DVD performance is elongated in all the WRONG places:  all of the harmonic cadence points. Yet, the end of the symphony was pretty much the same quick tempo as on his EMI studio recording.

InstantEncore has samples here: http://www.instantencore.com/music/details.aspx?PId=5082041
The conclusion (not fast) and applause are included.
The LPO site has the same audio: http://shop.lpo.org.uk/shop/Recordings/detail.asp?7628,0,0,0,0

Hi, I've received this one and have listened to it today. To be frank, the sound stage is very narrow and the overall balance is pretty poor. I realize that the M8 is a humongous task for the balance engineer but this one's balance is nowhere near the live M2 of the series. For instance, the "Blicket Auf" soloist is bloated to abnormal size, with the orchestra almost reduced to "Fernorchester". Also, the tympanist seems to have had an off day, coming in a tad early on several instances.

Anyway, I was waiting to be blown away by this, assuming it had the same grandeur as the M2, but alas, not in the same league.

Best regards from NL,

I don't feel that the short excerpts sound all that great either. Live, I'm sure it was a pretty impressive event.

Hi Barry,

The soundstage seemed so narrow that I checked my rig whether I had switched it to Mono by accident. Anyway, as you put it correctly, live it must have been very impressive.
