List Mahler's works in order of your current preference
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:08:31 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new here, but I've been a huge Mahler fan for a very long time.  This thread is sort of my break out thread (hehe).  Feel free to post your list of all of Mahler's symphonies and song cycles in order of your current preference.  I know with music, feelings change every day.  The only work which has consistently been my favorite is the 9th.

Look forward to seeing your lists.  I'll post mine soon. :)

2, 3, and 9, in equal order.  Mostly I listen to the Bernstein/DGG versions.

Simple:

1. The one I'm listening to right now.
2. The one I just finished listening to.
3. The one I heard before that.
etc.

Welcome to the board.

Cheers,
Herb

I'm rather new, too.
I've read back over the comments others have made in previous years, and many may not bother to post their favorites again.
As you said, they can vary, and for many of us, our favorite is the one we're listening to right now.

For years, my favorites have included:  3,2,8,6,4,9 and 10.
But who can not find things to love about 7 or 1 or DLVDE?

Also, I've recently discovered how much is inside each of the Lieder.

There is so much in Mahler's music that, for me at least, it seems it should be in a class of its own--beyond other music.
Und ruh' in einem stillen Gebiet

Some of us who have been around a while have done this before.

Which would be better - dig out the old threads, or do it again?

Some of the older ones may find this a little , shall we say, boring.

I tend to put all the symphonies on a par, I love them all. 6 is my favourite, and when I play thru M's works [I'm on my tenth cycle of that project], I also especially look forward to 7,9 and 10. I was knocked out by a Horenstein Proms performance of 9 [on YouTube, without interruptions to change the tape].

LE and 8 have been back-markers, for me, tho' they're really only a cigarette paper behing the rest.
