Sounds pretty darn good too - far better than any amateur/semi-pro performance I've been involved in.

What a world! Can you image what Mahler would have thought if you told him that by the year 2012, a bunch of young players in Bangkok would be performing a complete Mahler cycle at a thoroughly professional level!?! Incredible. Thanks for posting this.

This is kind of keeping with Mahler's prediction when he said that "Some day, they won't be playing Beethoven's symphonies any more - they'll be playing mine."  Though I think that's a bit stretching it, you generally do see about as many live performances and as many recordings nowadays of both composers' symphonies.  And that's considering that Mahler will be a draw, even if there are many more players that must be paid to play his works.

Thank you for your generous comments about our performance of Mahler 6 last month in Bangkok.  Believe it or not, that performance wasn't in fact the Thailand premiere - another orchestra associated with Mahidol University actually played the Thai premiere of M6 last year ... though I don't believe they're planning a complete cycle as we are.

Our performances of Nos 3, 5, 7 and 9 in the last couple of years, were, however all Thailand premieres....

Next month, my OTHER orchestra, the Siam Sinfonietta (which consists of kids around 13-22) will be doing No. 4.  I'm trying give the next generation of Mahler players here a bit of a head start.

It's possible to get DVDs and audio recordings of all of these.  We make them in very small numbers and sell them at our concerts, and some of them can be downloaded from instantencore.com if you type somtow as a search term.  We've got a few inquiries like this so I'm trying to get a link up on www.mahlerthai.com to make it easier to obtain them.

Just played it on YT.

Very good, engaging account. bravissimo to the players in the band who didn't even know Mahler. I think we even got the 3rd hammer blow.

Unfortunately I could not make it to Bangkok for the M6 performance; however I am now looking forward to the upcoming Vietnam première of Das Lied von der Erde, next month here in Hanoi (with program notes by yours truly).
