Jurowski/London Phil. "Manfred" is outstanding
« on: September 29, 2012, 04:30:53 AM »
I just received my Jurowski "Manfred" (used) through Amazon. I've owned many versions of Manfred over the years. Considering all factors that go into making an orchestral recording (conducting; orchestral execution; sound quality), this the best overall Manfred I've yet to encounter.

My only very minor quip is that I'm just not crazy about the splashy, metallic sounding Paiste tam-tams that they use ubiquitously in London. But hey, at least you can hear the darn thing. The organ - while not the most beautiful instrument I've ever heard - has plenty of power for its loud entrance. Jurowski conducts with plenty of fire, while the LPO plays superbly and with lots of heft. The sound quality is also really very good. And by the way, it's a live performance with applause at the end (yes, I know: I'd rather they leave the applause out as well).

Anyone who likes the Jurowski M2 recording would like this as well. I strongly endorse this one.
