Favorite standalone M10 Adagio
« on: January 30, 2013, 04:14:32 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm curious what you might recommend as a favorite recording of just the Adagio from Mahler's 10th? There's always plenty of discussion about the various performing versions / completions and their recordings, but I didn't see much on the board for just the Adagio.

Cheers,
Herb

Bernstein/NYP 1978. I can hardly stand to listen to it however, as I just pine for what he would have done to a completed version. ;) It really is one of his best recordings. Usually coupled with the 1st.

There are a lot of good ones, of course, but I suppose I'd choose Boulez/Cleveland/DG.

George Szell in Cleveland made an excellent Mahler 10 Adagio.  It may or may not be readily available, depending on your location.

.    .   Szell also recorded the "Purgatorio" movement, both movements coming from the Erwin Ratz Edition (Yoel Levi recorded just the Ratz 'Adagio' in Atlanta for Telarc, coupled to the "Resurrection" symphony). Good stuff.
