Amstertdam MahlerFest - Any chance it might be cancelled?
« on: March 09, 2020, 01:10:05 PM »
The NY Phil (M1 and M2) is the only orchestra on the schedule that has to travel inter-continental, so that might be the likeliness cancellation.  All the other orchestras are European.   So far the Netherlands has not been hard hit by Corona.

It's very much a 'wait and see' situation, don't you think? All of northern Italy is in a lock-down.

At the Facebook Mahler group, someone posted that the Concertgebouw is closed until March 31.

Simon Reinink, director of the Concertgebouw, responded on Twitter by saying that they are following government guidelines. This means that if the Dutch government extends its ban on public events of over 100 people until after mid-may, the festival will be canceled/postponed/adjusted.

Given that there is no vaccine, along with the shortage of ventilators and tests not being 100% reliable, I fail to see how anything is going to happen in the near future. Separating ourselves is the ONLY way to keep this dangerous virus from spreading. My advice to everyone is to just deal with it. As of right now, there are no other options. Mahler festivals, lovely as they are, can wait.

Hi all,

In case you'd missed the official cancellation: https://mahlerfestival.concertgebouw.nl/en/mahler-festival-2020-geannuleerd

Sad really, I would have been one of the speakers at the Mahlerfestival Symposium and would have given an pre concert talk for the Sixth. Maybe I'll get another chance...

Cheers,
Freddy

Freddy, I sincerely hope you do get that opportunity. Why would the delay mean anything? And if you do get to do the lecture, any chance it would get recorded and you could share it?

In case anyone missed it, the RCO is currently running a Mahler Festival Online, with archive performances of the symphonies (mostly from 2010-11) and documentaries for each symphony narrated by Marina Mahler, as well as short "Mahler Memories" by RCO players:
