bad new Mahler 1 and 9 cover...
« on: December 29, 2007, 04:45:37 PM »
Bad cover art has amused me for a long time. Is it just me, or is this cover just terrible?

Is that Schwarz on the right?  He looks to be painfully constipated...

Can't say I've ever seen Gustav's name spelled with an 'e' either...

Hey, where is this picture from? Is it real or a fake?

I know RPO was going to issue M9th sometime and I'd contacted them several times but I didn't know about this particular CD. Of course, they will fix it, but let me tell you, Schwarz's Mahler Ninth with Seattle Symphony orch. was pretty darn good.

I can't find it...so I assume this CD cover was faked by somebody; no recording company would be foolish enough to spell 'Gustave" :(

I doubt RLPO will ever release Schwarz's M9th during his lifetime.

Bad cover (which it is) or not, I'm very interested in Schwartz's M9.  Good to know it is being released soon!

This makes two new M9's in January (with the Macal/CPO M9).  8)

Thanks, Todd. But this is silly because they released the M1st some years ago already and I own it. Why do they make us to buy it again only to get the new M9th?

Oh, it's figured:

M1+ M9 on 2 CDs  > M9 on 2 CDs ;)

The Royal Liverpool perfomed really well on Libor Pesek's Mahler 9 recording for Virgin, so I'd say that Schwartz has a tough act to follow. At least he won't be spoon-feeding the piece to them.

It reminds me of the almost as bad Solti vs. Mahler covers from 20-25 years ago.

Even though I'm not a Solti fan, I could see him as being able to look Mahler in the eye. Schwarz on the other hand, just doesn't seem worthy, despite some nice recordings over the years.

"I could see him as being able to look Mahler in the eye"

yeah, but it ain't hard to figure which one is the dumber of the two!  Besides, the Mahler 3 that I heard Schwartz conduct in Seattle was much better than either of Solti's commercial recordings; in spite of the fact that the percussion department stupidly (yes, it's stupid!) played the tambourine part on a military side drum (tom-tom) - go figure! But to counter that blunder, Ewa Podles was fantastic. Schwartz's conducting was perfectly fine.

It's offtopic, but what IS going on with him and Seattle? From some articles I've read, it looks like there's going to be a bloodbath soon!

Actually, the Artek website says an entire Schwarz/RLPO Mahler Symphonies cycle is on the road:

http://www.artekrecordings.com/#upcoming

I have Schwarz/RLPO M1 & M4 and find them excellent. These are recordings with fresh interpretations and insights. The recording is warm, natural, slightly distant but very clear. I have a high expectation for the upcoming M9th release.
